This collection contains printed materials, correspondence, writings and photographs primarily focusing on African American history and culture; a small portion of the collection focuses on Afro-Brazilian and Brazilian culture. A substantial part of the collection is made up of photocopies or reproductions of title pages, correspondence, handwritten notes and other ephemeral materials. Within the collection, the pamphlet files contain the largest number of original prints.

Dorothy Burnett Porter Wesley librarian, curator, and bibliophile, was born on May 25, 1905 in Warrenton, Virginia to physician Hayes Joseph Burnett and tennis player Roberta (“Bertha”) Ball Burnett. Wesley, the eldest of four children, grew up in Montclair, New Jersey. She graduated from Miner Normal School, Washington D.C. in 1925 with the intention of becoming a teacher.
